Pasture Land Carbon Sequestration:

The School of Sustainable Food and Farming is supporting research into identifying opportunities to increase carbon sequestration in permanent pasture through changes in management practices.

This work will analyse current practices for permanent pasture in the UK, and use current literature to identify potential changes that could be made to increase carbon sequestration. Once these activities are complete, the project aims to evaluate the potential implementation of these changes in different UK systems, as well as identify common barriers to progress in this area.

The interim report is available here, with the final research findings and report due to be published later this year.

Undersowing maize ground with Perennial Rye Grass (PRG):

It is common knowledge that soil health is vital to the future of food production. The School of Sustainable Food and Farming is supporting research into soil protection methods through undersowing maize crops with a variety of grass types, including PRG, Festulolium and others.

“Undersown crops have the ability to bind soil and take up nutrients as they grow, as well as improving soil organic matter levels”
